BoneWelding®, a revolutionary bone fixation technology

Setting a new and superior standard for tissue regeneration

Minimally Invasive Bone Implant Fixation with reduced surgical time.

Our BoneWelding technique uses gentle ultrasonic energy, ensuring immediate bonding with the bone for superior anchoring. Remarkably, it achieves this even without the presence of cortical bone, by inducing controlled melting of specific polymeric implant components.
Step 1
The controlled and gentle instrument, combined with the ultrasonic vibration throught the sonotrode, guide the thermoplastic implant into the pre-drilled hole in the bone.
Step 2
Upon contact, the shearing forces between the bone and polymer react, causing small amounts of polymer to lequify.
Step 3
The liquid polymer flows into the trabecular tissue structure, immediately solidifies and provides a mechanically stable bond to the bone after only a few seconds.

Minimal Thermal Impact on the Bone

The thermal impact on the bone is minimal. The short ultrasonic impulse and the localized melting of the polymer do not disturb bone healing or osseointegration. Temperatures measured at the interface between bone and polymer rise by less than 10 °C and only for a few seconds.

Degradation of BoneWelding® Pin

Without fibrous tissue formation at the bone-polymer interface, there is a very minimal inflammatory reaction during the degradation process.

Frequency questions

What are resorbable implants?
Resorbable implants opposed to e.g. titanium implants dissolve in the patient’s body over time. These kind of implants are used to treat fractures for instance in minor load-bearing areas - so the fracture is stable and the implant holds the two fracture parts in place. After some weeks or months when the fracture has already started to consolidate, the resorbable implant starts to dissolve. A big advantage is that no second operation is needed to remove the foreign body.
What are the pins made of ?
The main material used is made of 100% PDLLA. Mostly used in Europe. Some of our licensees in the US choose however a mix of 85% PLLA and 15% PGA.
Is it safe to use Bonewelding ?
Yes, this technology is not only clinically proven and validated, but also impresses with its patient-friendliness. The implants are hydrolytically degraded in a controlled manner. The implants are primarily stable, easy and practical to use, fast and safe.
What are the benefits of Bonewelding ?
It has an extremely simple and intuitive application. There is no dislocation of the bone fragments, no shearing of screw heads. It is flexible in terms of geometry, which guarantees the best tissue compatibility. It has maximum anchorage even on ostheoporotic bone or in younger children.
